Nine out of 10 motorists face higher road tax under changes announced in this week's Budget, it has been claimed.

The TaxPayers' Alliance calculated that 88% of vehicles would be hit with higher duty, while only 9% would leave their owners better off.

MOTORISTS are so attached to their cars they would continue to drive until fuel nearly doubled in price, according to a survey published today.

The poll found that petrol would have to reach £1.83 a litre to have a major impact on car use, compared to current average pump prices of nearly £1 a litre.

Hauliers avoid fuel cost protests

Truckers in Scotland have ruled out protests over rising fuel prices which they claim have been devastating smaller firms.
Members of the Road Haulage Association of Scotland (RHAS) organised a meeting in the wake of fuel breaching the £1-a-litre mark.
RHAS said feelings have been running as high as at the time of the fuel demonstrations in 2000.

Low Emission Zone high cost, minimal benefit

The Mayor of London plans to charge high polluting vehicles to enter London will bring virtually no added improvements to the capitals air quality despite costing around £600 million to introduce and enforce says London Councils.

The Mayor is seeking to introduce a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) from 2008 to reduce the pollution being pumped into Londons air from vehicle exhausts. Under the scheme vehicles like heavy goods lorries, vans, coaches and buses would have to pay to drive through the capital.
